The Slugs was a comic strip created by Tony Husband and Les Barton which appeared in Oink!, 1987-8.
The Armydayus String Trio were rehearsing one day when a batch of punk records was delivered to the wrong address. The group decided to play them to "see how the other half lives" and were so deeply affected that they immediately changed their look, sound and demeanour to become The Slugs, a dreadful rock group whose quest for fame seemed forever doomed.
Their final appearance, co-written by Charlie Brooker, did actually see them rise to fame, thanks to the addition of a wild female singer called Anna Key, and ended with them living happily (and wealthily) ever after.
