"Sambo, Sue, and Jolly Golly" was a strip that ran in Sunbeam.

Starring three African children, their teacher, their aunt Clo and the local wildlife (who, strangely enough, had a better grasp of English than the human characters), the strip was a textbook example of the black stereotypes that existed in comics at the time.

Largely indistinguishable from countless contemporaries, about the only thing remarkable about the characters was the curious figure of Jolly Golly. Golliwog characters were nothing unusual in comics of this period - Chicks' Own had at least two, for example - but they were usually presented as toys come to life, or otherwise clearly fantasy characters. Given the context of this strip, however, Jolly Golly was apparently just a kid who enjoyed dressing as a golliwog...
