John Henry "Jack" Gordon was born in St. George in the East, London, in the third quarter of 1890. His father, Thomas, was a customs clerk, and his mother, Minnie, was a music teacher. He moved north to Dundee and joined DC Thomson as a staff artist, drawing for the "big five" story papers, The Rover, Adventure, The Wizard, The Hotspur and The Skipper. He also drew "Jimmy's Mother Wouldn't Run Away" (1942-43), "King Kong Charlie" (1944) and "Sam Spitfire" (1949) for The Beano. He died on 8 December 1965. His older brother Chick was also a DC Thomson staff artist.
