Hugh Grenham Gladwish was born in St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex, in the second quarter of 1927, son of Reginald Sydney Gladwish and his wife Ellen Muriel, née Grenham. At the age of 15 he moved to London and joined the cartoon department of the Gaumont Picture Corporation, which eighteen months later became Gaumont-British Animation. He later moved to British Animated Productions where he worked on the Bubble and Squeek series. He was art director on the 1949 live action film adaptation of The Fall of the House of Usher, and then returned to animation as a director for the Film Producers Guild. In 1953 and '54 he painted the covers for TV Comic's first two annuals.

Inj 1963 he was recruited by Associated British-Pathé, for whom he worked on short road safety films, before co-writing and directing The Ghost Goes Gear (1966), a vehicle for the Spencer Davis Group and directing Cucumber Castle (1970), a TV movie starring the Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, Vincent Price and Spike Milligan, among others. He then formed the Hugh Gladwish Film Company, which mainly made adverts, and Mister Gladwish and Mister Blair Ltd., with John Blair.

In his later years he painted nautical scenes, but he suffered from depression and other health problems and attempted suicide. He died in his flat in Grassington Lodge, Eastbourne, on or around 28 July 2011, aged 84. His body was not discovered until 19 August. An inquest recorded an open verdict, the coroner believing it was likely suicide but lacking evidence to say for certain.
