Betty May Larom was born in Hampstead, London, on 5 December 1920, daughter of Frederick G. Larom and his wife May Emma, née Rosenthall. She married Henry Peter Ryland in Westminster, London, in 1949.

She drew for British comics in the 1950s and 60s. Strips she worked on include "Happy and Butterball" in TV Comic (1955-), "The Story of Dumpy" in Robin (1958-60), and "Camberwick Green" in Pippin (1966). She also wrote and illustrated children's books.

Her second husband, Neville Main, whom she married in Chelsea in 1964, was also a comic artist and children's illustrator. She died in Hounslow, Middlesex, on 4 December 1972.
