Escape was an anthology title created by Paul Gravett and Peter Stanbury which ran from 1983 to 1989. Its contributors were small press creators, and it has been described by writer James Chapman as "a more professionally produced version of the Fast Fiction anthology".[1]
Escape took influence from the comics of continental Europe. "We don't need any more impersonators of the American mainstream giants of the last twenty years", ran the second issue. "For comics to have a future here — as they already have in Europe and elsewhere — the people drawing them must bring in new ideas and influences to draw about." Befitting this approach, the anthology referred to its strips as "United Kingdom Bande Dessinée" or "UKBD".[2]
