Doris Kinnear was born Doris Brine, in South Shields, Durham, in the fourth quarter of 1909, daughter of Harry Brine, a licensed victualler, and his wife Marie Louise, née Robinson. She moved to Dundee and joined DC Thomson as a staff artist some time in the 1930s, and married fellow Thomsons employee Donald Kinnear in Dundee in 1939. She drew spot illustrations for the Sunday Post, and the covers for Bunty from 1958 to 1985.  She died in Dundee in 1991, aged 81.
