Day of the eagle

Art by Patrick Wright, 1975

"Day of the Eagle" was a spy series that ran in Battle Picture Weekly from 8 March to 24 May 1975. Written by Eric Hebden and drawn initially by Patrick Wright, later episodes by Barrie Mitchell, it was essentially a WWII rewrite of Frederick Forsyth's Day of the Jackal, with Mike Nelson, top agent for the British Army’s Special Operations Executive, on a mission to assassinate Hitler. It was one of the most popular strips in the comic, and spawned a series of sequels, most with "Eagle" in the title, written by Robert Ede, John Wagner, Gerry Finley-Day, Pat Mills, Alan Hebden and Chris Lowder, and drawn by Wright, Mitchell, Geoff Campion, Eduard Vaňo and Masip, until 1981.
